The research for this book unearthed a patent for a nutcracker attachment, filed by Dr. Moy on July 18, 1906 and granted on March 31, 1908. You can read it by clicking the image above. Dr. Moy is believed to be the first Chinese in America ever to apply to the U.S. government for patent protection, although he was not the first to receive it. He also applied in Canada for protection for the same invention.
On May 29, 2012, United States Patent and Trademark Office Director David Kappos presented Chinese State Intellectual Property Office Commissioner Tian Lipu in Beijing with a commemorative copy of Dr. Jin Fuey Moy's patent for a nutcracker attachment. It is believed to be the first application ever received by USPTO from a subject of the Emperor of China. An entry about this patent was published in Mark Allen Cohen's China IPR blog in January 2012. You can read it here. Photo courtesy of Mark Allen Cohen.
